Baby and Toddler Circumcision

Baby and Toddler Circumcision

Circumcision can be an anxious time, especially for parents when it comes to their son. Here at Circumcision in London, we take out the worry as you can be sure that your son will receive the best possible care. We perform circumcision under local anaesthetic, so that your son will not feel any pain during the circumcision and we give you comprehensive aftercare to follow to ensure he is as comfortable as possible afterwards. When you book an appointment, you will be sent videos on how to prepare for the circumcision and we will explain to you step by step what to expect from start to finish. On the day of the circumcision, we begin by giving your son local anaesthetic. We wait a few minutes for the anaesthetic to work and then test him before starting the circumcision, showing you exactly how he does not feel any pain. It is only once you say that you are happy that your son does not feel any pain, we begin the circumcision. The circumcision at this age will only take about 10 minutes, but the local anaesthetic will last for about 2 hours. Once we finish, you will be able to put on his nappy and his trousers and take him back home normally. Once that wears off, then you have our aftercare instructions which we explain to you and give you in print. This will tell you exactly what you need to do to make sure your son is as comfortable as possible.

What to expect during the circumcision?

Plastibell/ Circumplast (ring) Circumcision

This procedure is usually used with young infants and toddlers. After giving the local anaesthetic, the foreskin is separated from the head of the penis (glans). A plastic ring fits around the head of the penis (glans) and the foreskin is pulled over the ring. A thread is then tied on the skin. This thread will cut the blood supply from the foreskin which will eventually die and fall off with the ring usually within 3-14 days. It is very similar to the umbilical cord which eventually dies and falls off. If the ring does not fall off in 2 weeks, then you just have to book a follow up appointment and it will take us a few seconds to remove it.

What is the best age for circumcision?

We advise to do the circumcision as soon as possible. The best age for circumcision is under 1 month old. Usually the circumcision will be very quick and simple and also the healing process will be quicker. However, if your son is older, we still carry out circumcisions for all ages routinely from infants to adults.

How do you give the local anaesthetic?

The circumcision is carried out under local anesthetic. Your son will be awake but the penis will be numb and he will not feel pain. The local anesthetic is given using a very fine needle, to minimize the discomfort. This is given at the base of the penis and the local anesthetic usually works within 1 minute. We do not use any numbing creams such as EMLA cream as this is contra-indicated around the genitals according to the manufacturers instructions. We find that a lot of times, we only need one injection point and there is no reaction from the patient from the insertion of the needle. The discomfort is due to the solution that has a stinging sensation initially for a few seconds, but then becomes numb very quickly. Numbing creams will have no effect on this stinging sensation.

Is the circumcision painful?

No, as we give local anesthetic to all patients. Local anesthetic is safe for all ages and it is illegal to circumcise without it. We test your son before starting the circumcision and show you how he does not feel any pain. The local anesthetic will take away the pain sensation but maintain normal touch sensation which is painless. The baby may cry from this painless touch as it feels like an unusual sensation in the genitalia.

Do you tidy up previous circumcisions (re-circumcision)?

Yes we do. In fact we have many parents who bring their son from all over the UK and even outside of the UK asking us to tidy up previous circumcisions they have had elsewhere and they are not happy with it. This varies from scar revisions to tightening up loose circumcisions etc. Please contact us for a quote, You may need to come for a consultation first to discuss your exact requirements and for us to examine your son's existing circumcision.

Preparation for circumcision

The circumcision will be carried out under local anaesthetic and preparation is very minimal. You will be required to bring the following with you:

  • Clean nappy

  • Baby Wipes

  • Bottle of milk or dummy (if your son takes one)

  • Birth certificate

  • Your son's red book (if your son has any medical problems, please inform us before your appointment as we sometimes may need letters from his doctors)

  • IDs for patient and both parents. If you are a single parent, please call us for alternative arrangements

Circumcision aftercare

The aftercare we give our patients is very comprehensive, yet simple. Once we finish the circumcision, we will show you how to apply your son's nappy which can be placed immediately. Below is a summary of the aftercare instructions but when you book, you will receive a much more thorough aftercare sheet and videos to follow. There are illustrations to follow along with photos of what to expect during the healing process. We are always available for contact if you have any further questions or concerns. We can be reached via phone, email or in person with our free follow ups.
